Biography
My name is Nick Chavez and i was born in El Paso Texas and raised in Santa Rosa New Mexico. I first came to Alaska in 1967 while serving in the Army as a Medic. When my enlistment ended in 1969, i decided to make Alaska my home because i fell in love with the landscape and all the beautiful Alaskan wildlife. Even after 38 years, Alaska provides me with a never ending array of subects to paint.
I am primarly self taught. My vision of Alaska has been shaped by the work of greaty painters of the far north, like Sidney Lawrence, Bill Engles, Fred Machetanz, Randal Compton, Earnest Robertson and Edna Wilder. Other outside artists who have influenced my art carreer tremendeously are Portrait Artist Cindy Brassell, Wildlife and Landscape Artist Robert Bateman, Abstract Artist David Johns and last but not least, my grandmother who gave me my first watercolor set at the age of 12.
My two demensional works are primarily Acrylics and i also work in all mediums. I paint on Canvas, Metal Gold Pans,Watercolor Paper, Masonite, Wood Panels and most recently Sandpaper. The miner's Gold Pan has inspired generations of Alaskan Artists by the depth and rigidity of its surface and symbolic value as a utilitarian object. My 3D Gold Pans are unique anywhere in the world. They include sculptural elements created using found objects, silicone, epoxy and liquid nails mixed with Acrylic Paint. They range anywhered from a two inch Gold Pan to a monumental 36 inch Gold Pan.
My paintings have been displayed in the National Gallery in Washington D.C., galleries in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, the Bear Gallery and New Horizons Gallery in Fairbanks, Alaska and the State Gallery in Juneau, Alaska.
My original works are priced from $75 and $5000.00 depending on size and complexity. I can do prints of any size from my original paintings. Prices vary depending on the size of the print. My most popular size prints are:
